Very shallow cylindrical shells of an open profile subjected to the external pressure are analysed in the paper numerically using the finite element method. Load - displacement paths for different shapes of profiles are calculated for the perfect and imperfect geometry, respectively. Special attention is paid to the influence of shape of the profile on load-carrying capacity of the shell. Load levels in limit points of specific shells are compared and the effect of curvature changes along the arch is analyzed. Attention is also paid to the influence of initial geometric imperfection on the limit load level of fundamental equilibrium path of nonlinear analysis. Load - displacement paths are calculated for the right cylinders only and the circle, parabola, vertical and horizontal ellipses as profiles. Newton-Raphson iterative technique was chosen for calculation using ANSYS system, arc-length method was used for overcoming critical points.
