摘要

It is estimated that 884 million people (13% of the world's population) lack access to improved water sources, with 84% of these people living in rural areas and 37% concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa. The impacts of unclean water on human health can be measured in disease and mortality. According to the Water, Sanitation and Health Group of the World Health Organization (WHO), 1.6 million people die annually from diarrheal diseases due to unsafe water and poor sanitation. Ninety percent of these deaths are in children under the age of five. Moreover, 133 million people have intestinal infections and another 160 million people contract schistosomiasis annually (WHO/UNICEF, 2010).
