THE APPLICATION OF INNOVATIVE AUTOCAD BASED TOOLS TO POSITION SAFETY SIGNS AND AID WAYFINDING IN COMPLEX ENVIRONMENTS

Wayfinding and evacuations can be limited by poor information and user disability. Good system design will ensure compliance with legislation and usability. While the positioning and design of signs is strongly legislated the methods of wayfinding design are not. Funding was obtained to investigate the use of both ImplaCAD and SignCirCAD which are AutoCAD plug in tools for signage design and placement in a major UK construction project. ImplaCAD is currently available as freeware from Spanish company Implaser. The Spanish partners are currently developing a new signage software tool (SignCirCAD). A second aim of the project is to give appropriate feedback so that the software is inline with UK standards and needs.
