DIAGENETIC CONTROLS ON CHARACTER OF CARBONATE RESERVOIRS: SURFACES AND SETTING

After deposition, carbonates are modified by diagenesis that can markedly alter reservoir properties. As such, studies investigating post-depositional alteration of carbonates can provide novel insights into complex patterns of reservoir quality. Systematic study of diagenetic processes controlling those patterns can be used to build improved models for reservoir carbonates. Are there, however, basic constraints that can be used as predictors? Surface and setting, and the variables related to each, appear to be two helpful guidelines for improving predictability. Stratigraphic surfaces, such as sequence boundaries with influx of meteoric water, or depositional surfaces below water bodies with mesohaline and hypersaline brines appear to be essential constraints for low-temperature diagenesis. Also important are aspects of setting, including climate, paleotopography, and hydrogeology.
