Reactive transport modeling (RTM) is providing exciting new insights into our understanding of dolomitization. Published RTM studies focus on basin- and platform scale dolomitization, examining the distribution of dolomite bodies, the duration of dolomitization, and the effects of platform geometry, fluid composition, temperature, and flow regime on the dolomitization process (e.g., Jones and Xiao, 2005; Whitaker and Xiao, 2010). Collectively these studies highlight that dolomitization occurs in complex non-linear system with multiple potential feedbacks.
