The geochemistry of caves, their dissolution, their speleothems, and the geomorphic processes in the karst areas in which they are embedded are primarily concerned with the carbonate minerals (leaving aside gypsum karst and sulfate minerals in limestone caves). The objective of this paper is to review the mineralogy of the carbonate minerals, their structures, and their crystal chemical relationships. For a more comprehensive review of carbonate minerals see Reeder (1983). For a comprehensive review of minerals in caves see Hill and Forti (1997).
