Late stage, mesogenetic dissolution (burial corrosion) is a widespread process in many hydrocarbon reservoirs. Several processes have been proposed such as oxidation of H_2S released from the kitchen or via thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR), retrograde solubility, and mixing corrosion. Its effects are being increasingly recognized in reservoirs, but actually identifying the processes responsible can be difficult, as the dominant process is destructive. A noticeable association with corrosion in some of BG's reservoirs is the presence of dickite. Another issue is to explain the cause of the flux of these corrosive fluids and the fate of all the carbonate in solution.
