IMAGING EVALUATION OF SEPSIS AND SEVERE INJURIES OF THE DIGIT

Severe lameness localized to the digit can have catastrophic implications for the horse and can result in loss of use for the horse and possibly euthanasia. Some causes of severe lameness in the digit can be readily diagnosed with a thorough physicalexamination, clinical signs, and standard radiographic views of the foot. However, failure to respond to therapy or confusing/inconclusive results with conventional imaging, diagnostic blocks, and synovial fluid analysis can be extremely frustrating forall parties. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides detailed information related to osseous and soft tissue structures in the digit and is beneficial for medical and surgical planning as well as a clearer determination of prognosis.
