The traditional way to connect offshore wind power plants is to use national, radial solutions. The Kriegers Flak project aims to develop and implement an innovative, multi-purpose use of the sub sea cables. When this large-scale project is completed, it will have addressed the technical challenges of designing, installing and operating a Combined Grid Solution based on the new multi-terminal HVDC voltage source converter (VSC) technology. Kriegers Flak will also have addressed a number of challenges due to different political, regulatory, and environmental frameworks between the countries involved. Assuming the last political barriers being removed, the project aims towards final realization in 2017, interconnecting both, Danish and German offshore wind power plants operating at Kriegers Flak, being at the same time open for connection to Sweden at a later stage.
