FTS converts a mixture of H2 and CO (syngas) derived from coal to liquid paraffins and olefins. The primary reactions are: Paraffins: (2n + 1 )H2 + nCO→ C_nH_(2n+2) + nH2O Olefins: 2nH2 + nCO → C_n H_(2n )+ nH2O Syngas from coal has H2 /CO ≤1. The water-gas shift (WGS) is used to raise the H2 / CO ratio to 2. WGS: CO + H2O→CO2 + H2 For a large plant, this produces huge emissions of CO2. We propose to replace the WGS with catalytic dehydrogenation (CDH) of the light products of FTS (CH4 , C2H8 , etc.). CDH: CH4 .→ C + 2H2 , where the C is in the form of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT).
