In China, wheat straw is an abundant resource that needs to be utilized effectively. This project evaluated the ability to use wheat straw in the wood-plastic composite (WPC) industry. WPCs are usually manufactured by extrusion. However, the size of the extruded board and bio-fibers are limited. When mixing with the plastic matrix in a rotation mixer such as an extruder, the wheat straw tends to reduce into a powder. During extrusion, wheat straw also experiences more severe thermo-degradation than wood fiber. Therefore, we chose to use hot pressing as a method to manufacture straw-polymer composites.
