In this paper a dynamic connection request grooming technique has been explored for wavelength-routed wavelength-division multiplexing network with sparsely distributed grooming and regeneration facilities. In the proposed heuristic method, the grooming and regeneration facilities located at specific node positions of the network are judiciously employed such that the offered traffic is served in most efficient manner given the limited availability of network resources. In particular, connection requests with relatively larger bandwidth demands should preferably be restored through regenerators, whereas relatively smaller connection requests should preferably be groomed together. Exhaustive simulation studies show that for all values of offered traffic load irrespective of traffic demand profile and location of deployed grooming and regeneration equipments, the proposed method improves blocking probability compared to the scenario when grooming and regeneration devices are preferred for larger and smaller connection requests respectively.
