Effects of Polymer Coating on the Permeability of Cement-Based Materials

Polymer coating is being used in engineering field to improve concrete durability. The permeability of cement-based materials of surface layer concrete is closely related to the durability of concrete but the study on influence of polymer coating on the permeability of the cement-based materials is unsystematic. The effects of polymer coating on chloride ion diffusion, capillary absorption and air penetration of cement-based materials of surface concrete were investigated. The results show that polymer coating can improve both chloride ion diffusion resistance and anti-air penetration of cement-based materials of surface layer concrete within a certain depth. Furthermore, polymer coating can reduce capillary absorption of surface layer mortar and improve microstructure of cement-based materials in the surface regions.
