This paper presents a study on the effect of atmospheric parameters on fine particulate mass concentrations in the suburbs of Shanghai. Temperature, wind speed, relatively humidity and particulate mass concentration were measured discontinuously from January 2009 to January 2010 in the Jiading district of Shanghai, China. A sensitivity analysis was conducted between atmospheric parameters and particulate mass concentration. For difference particle sizes, the atmospheric parameters have a different effect on the particulate mass concentration. A significant boundary for these effects is the diameter of 1μm. The ventilation index and dilution index were calculated using the data of December 2009. A correlation analysis was conducted between the two indexes and particulate mass concentration. The results indicated that there was a tight correlation between the two indexes and the particulate concentration of three particle sizes (<0.1μm, 0.1-1.0μm, 1.0-2.5μm). The Spearman correlation coefficient values were -0.45, - 0.56 and -0.47, while the coefficient values of the dilution index were -0.36, -0.42 and -0.45, respectively. It was also found that the effects of temperature and relative humidity on the particulate concentration differed for various particle sizes.
