Low Technology Risk: The technology relies on mature components assembled in a novel process. Pilot plant completed in July 2011, now in operation connected to distribution network; Large Scale: One of only a few technologies which can be delivered today at the 50-100 MW + hundreds of MWh scale using existing equipment from major equipment suppliers. Experience in the utility sector indicates potential for competitive "mature" costs; Efficient Waste Heat Harnessing: Can be located alongside industrial demand and harness waste heat. Highview's system is able to utilise low grade waste heat more efficiently than Organic Rankin Cycle systems; Flexibility: Not constrained by geography and systems can be located near demand where they are required. Configurable to suit application (charging rate v amount of storage v discharge power), allowing optimised economic performance; Development Potential: Can take advantage of adjacent technology developments, once mature (e.g. isothermal compressors as proposed in several above ground compressed air systems). Footprint: Good energy density compared to many other systems, allowing relatively large installations in smaller sites (400x greater than pumped hydro at 100 m head and around 4x greater than above ground compressed air at 200 bar).
