Renewable energy sources lead to (local) challenges for the distribution grid; Energy storage (electric and/or thermal) are additional sources of flexibility; Batteries are expensive and business case depends on context: increase inefficiency and decrease in cost needed; multi-objective control strategies are preferred but power electronics can already offer part of the solution; Thermal energy storage (in first place: water buffers) in combination with heat pumps (optimization of power consumption) and CHP (optimization of power generation) are interesting flexibility options.
