Growing electricity demands, in combination with undispatchable local energy sources, will put a pressure on the electrical grid; Active controlled heat pumps in combination with thermal energy storage can support grid balancing; A lab setup was built to assess the performance. A market-based multi agent system (MAS) was used for balancing supply and demand. The lab tests indicate: 1. the MAS performs properly, however there is still room for improvement 2. the active controlled heat pump consumes more electricity than in the reference case, due to an increased number of switches 3. Active control decreases the energy exchange with of the electricity grid.
