This paper discusses interrelations of power sources and CO_2 sources which are fundamental for a systematically and environmentally reasonable use of the power-to-gas long-term storage concept. From a systematic point of view the charging power in different system situations and the role of the CO_2 source for the methanation are evaluated. The balance of CO_2-emissions for the process from power to gas and re-conversion to electricity shows that only the use of renewable energy in combination with CO_2 without emission responsibility obtains an ecological system benefit compared with the emissions of fossil peak load power.
