New Insights in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is an autosomal dominant disease in the two thirds of cases, that affects 1/500 persons with a penetrance less than 100% and various phenotypic expressions of the mutation, depending on the environmental effect. Once a patient is diagnosed with the disease according to the symptoms, the electrocardiogram and the echocardiography, has to be assessed for the probability of sudden cardiac death and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction in order to decide whether an implantable cardioverter defibrillator should be implanted or an interventional treatment should be performed.
