The paper indicates some of the similarities and differences between two methods of localised reinforcement of continuous fibre/thermoset matrix composites, namely Z-pinning and tufting. Both techniques have the advantage of only requiring one-sided access to the laminate stack or preform to be reinforced. While Z-pinning is intended for use with preimpregnated fabrics, tufting is best suited for the dry preform/liquid moulding processes [1]. For design purposes, both techniques must be treated as a local structural modification, not a material change.
