The whole performance of mechanical product includes three aspects, respectively structural performance, working performance and craft performance. These performances influence the design quality directly. Visual optimization design (VOD) is a kind of digital method and it can improve the three-performances if is used in the design process of mechanical product. In the paper, the definition of VOD is introduced briefly, the study objects, study contents and study method of VOD are discussed in detail and then the relation equation is proposed. On the basis of these works, the theory frame of VOD methodology is set up. At last, taking a 3-TPT parallel machine tool as study case, the VOD is applied to study parametric modeling, opening kinemics visualization analysis system, dynamics visualization solution, working process and assembling process simulation of the machine tool, which shows the validity of the method.
