Comparative Evaluation of Soft-Switching Concepts for Bi-directional Buck+Boost Dc-Dc Converters

Soft-switching techniques are an enabling technol-ogy to further reduce the losses and the volume of automotivedc-dc converters, utilized to interconnect the high voltage batteryor ultra-capacitor to the dc-link of a Hybrid Electrical Vehicle(HEV) or a Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV). However, as the performanceindices of a power electronics converter, such as efficiency andpower density, are competing and moreover dependent on theunderlying specifications and technology node, a comparisonof different converter topologies naturally demands detailedanalytical models. Therefore, to investigate the performance ofthe ARCP, CF-ZVS-M, SAll and ZCT-QZVT soft-switchingconverters, the paper discusses in detail the advantages anddrawbacks of each concept, and the impact of the utilizedsemiconductor technology and silicon area on the converterefficiency. The proposed analytical models that correlate semi-conductor, capacitor and inductor losses with the componentvolume furthermore allow for a comparison of power densityand to find the tp-Pareto.Front of the CF-ZVS-M converter.
