Development and Properties of New Duplex Stainless Steels

During recent decades the stainless steel world has seen a large number of new duplex alloys presented and marketed. Both leaner and higher alloys than the dominating 22Cr grade 2205 have appeared on the market. We have seen a recent pattern where producers as well as consumers of stainless steel have become more active in developing and requesting new duplex grades. With the introduction of new “lean” duplex grades, the use of duplex grades has increased for previously “non-duplex” applications, which may not require corrosion resistance up to the level of 2205. The market appreciation for these new grades is taken as a sign of a trend where the market to a larger extent than in the past will be expecting stainless grades, which are tailored to meet specific service demands in combination with cost efficient use of raw materials.
