Case Histories: Failure of Stainless Equipment and Piping in a Typical Chemical Processing Facility

In a typical organic chemical processing facility, over 50% of the equipment and piping are made of austenitic stainless steels such as 304L/316L and higher alloyed materials such as nickel alloys or above. Much of these are due to the highly corrosive and/or elevated temperature environments, and a few of them are for cleanliness and product purity requirements.
