Abnormal reduction of Eu ions in silver borate glasses

The reduction of Eu~(3+) to Eu~(2+) has been realized under air atmosphere in silver borate glasses. By controlling sliver concentration in silver borate glasses, the emission of Eu~(2+) can be tuned from 440nm to 510nm. So, bright and tunable white lights have been achieved in europium single doped silver borate glasses. It is believed that europium single doped silver borate glass is potentially useful as an ultraviolet-convertible phosphor for white-light emitting diodes. Because europium single doped silver borate glass can not only conquer the difficulty in color and lifetime balance of the multi-color phosphors LEDs, but also avoid energy transfer and cross-relaxation between two/three kinds of different rare earths, which may result in quenching fluorescence.
