Hypoxemia, low oxygen tensions in the blood, is a consideration for a patient who is about to undergo or has undergone surgery. Patients with pre-existing lung disease or who acquired a pulmonary condition around surgery to include aspiration pneumonitis/pneumonia and atelectesis, or who are hypoventilating due to CNS lesions or drug induced respiratory depression must have their ability to oxygenate and ventilate evaluated.
