Since the early 1980s when biotechnology came into commercial application as an emerging technology, its impact on national economies has become more and more manifest. Biotechnology applications are becoming increasingly profound, especially with the developments in genomics, bioinformatics and genetic engineering. What is of essence in the trends in biotechnology applications is the connection to the development challenges of specific sub-regions of the world. Africa is at the centre of the debate on how to stimulate growth, improve the lives of the people in their respective societies and ensure sustainable development of its environment.
