A filling study was conducted with a new laser-net technology on U. S. Steel Canada's Hamilton Works 'E' blast furnace, which is equipped with a bell-less top charging system. The falling curves and burden profiles were determined accurately. The chute angles were set up on the basis of the experimental data and theoretical calculations. A burden distribution computer simulation model was then developed and implemented to design a new charging practice. The work has improved the furnace stability and productivity, generated a significant savings in coke cost and realized a significant reduction in CO_2 emission.
