Two, high volume, twin-shell, Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) were upgraded at SDI, Butler for increased furnace productivity from 2.8 to over 3 MTY. The EAF modifications consisted of an overall 5 foot shell height increase that included a deeper lower shell for hot heel increase from 20 to 70 tons, over 6 inches of additional slag volume allowance and AVi feet taller upper shells to achieve single roof opening sequence charging. Challenges included increased risk of scrap cave-ins and electrode vibration due to the increased furnace shell height and increased length of the graphite electrode columns. Design, installation and start up experience, operational and maintenance results are discussed.
