In May 2004, a new EAF was commissioned as part of a minimill project realised by Concast AG at Nucor Jewett in Texas. The tap weight is only 82 t, but efficient single-bucket scrap charging and high melting power input enables productivity of 140 t h~(-1) and an annual liquid steel output of 1 Mt to be achieved. Nucor's requirement of single-bucket operation demanded non-standard solutions - in terms of both design and operation. To minimise cycle time, the furnace has been equipped to enable fully automatic melting. The mechanical design has proven extremely reliable, with minimal downtime for maintenance.
