Patterned Film For Effective Vehicular Transparent Surfaces' Pico Projection Applications

Tinted vehicle windows are commonly used for different applications among which are providing privacy, reducing transmitted sun light in hot climates and sometimes just for aesthetics among other uses. The herein reported work was geared towards retaining these traditional aspects of tinted vehicle windows while adding a new display aspect component for custom display applications. We applied a low cost dual purpose diffusely transmitting and diffusely reflective pattern onto a low cost PVC plastic film using a conventional office laser printing method. This custom pattern printed film was then applied to both transparent and conventionally tinted vehicle windows to observe the change in image quality projected onto them using a low cost 45 lumens LCoS Pico projector made in China. Images were observed and recorded under conventional bright lit environment and unlit dark environments. The results showed significantly improved visibility from regular transparent and conventionally tinted surfaces compared to those augmented with our custom patterned printed film.
