Pilot scale TMP refining of dry black spruce and balsam fir demonstrated the general trend that chip solids contents up to about 77% by themselves should not be detrimental to the pulp properties. At around 90% solids, however, the pulp quality suffered. Beetle killed lodgepole pine harvested at 80% solids content conformed reasonably well to this general trend. The strength properties were recovered to a large degree by rewetting. The residual negative effect was around 2 Nm/g tensile index at CSF =100 mL for black spruce and balsam fir and around 1 Nm/g for the beetle killed lodgepole pine.
