A new lab drainage testing has been developed to characterize the drainage resistance of forming fabrics at different sheet basis weights. The drainage resistance profile obtained through lab drainage testing provides information about the relative change of the drainage resistance in comparing with other fabrics when different amounts of fibers are deposited on the fabric surface. Four case studies have been presented to demonstrate the application of the drainage testing. The Field feedback and the case studies indicate that the lab drainage results correlate well with the drainage performance of a forming fabric in a paper machine. The lab drainage testing can be a good tool to predict the drainage performance of various forming fabrics.
