Despite the advances in reducing the cost and improving the durability of all of the critical material such as catalysts and membranes, the overall cost and the durability of the fuel cell system are not yet competitive with power generation from internal combustion engines. Starting in 2009, Ford Motor Company began pursuing an aggressive strategy to develop fuel cell system architectures that have the potential to dramatically reduce the cost of fuel cell systems. During the last three years, a set of fuel cell system architectures were selected that, in conjunction with developments in stack technology, have the greatest potential for minimizing the cost of fuel cell systems.
