Renewable power generation continues to be of interest in the developed world as a replacement for traditional electrical power sources, such as coal-fired power plants. One approach that minimizes overall grid disruption is to introduce distributed generating capability using renewable sources such as solar or wind power. This has the potential to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by mitigating the need for additional coal or gas-fired power plants.One of the challenges, however, with these renewable power sources is that the electricity supplied can vary with time of day in a way that does not match demand. Several teams have looked at how to better match electricity supply to demand through various energy storage methods. Electrochemical systems provide good opportunities to meet this energy storage need, and one approach is to use a combination of electrolyzer and fuel cell system to store and retrieve stored energy.
