Fast and Micro Gas Chromatography techniques have been around for many years with the first real product coming from a Stanford Research Institute patent as commercialized by Microsensor Technology Inc. in the early 1980s. While these devices have evolved into fine vapor phase analyzers in some cases, they have been quite limited based on the type of sample introduction technique, detectors available and the temperature capabilities of silicon wafers. The broad use of gas chromatography must include both vapor and vaporizable liquid sample capabilities. This means the equipment must be able to operate reliably with component temperatures up to as much as 400oC, far beyond the capability of silicon. Thus, a stigma has developed around the terms Fast and Micro that relegates the techniques to niche applications.
