Traditionally, the most common military and civilian aviation turbine fuels used in the United States have been JP-8 and Jet-A, respectively. The two fuels are very similar apart from the additive package. However, in recent years, there has been increasing interest in the expansion of aviation fuel feedstocks to include nonpetroleum sources such as natural gas, coal, and biomass. High fuel costs, the need to secure supply chains, and environmental concerns, are all driving factors for this interest.
