Ship hulls suffering collision or grounding damages will have reduced hull girder strength. The strength reduction will depend on the characteristics and extension of the hull plating rupture, extension of holes in ship side/bottom areas and level of large permanent plastic deformations and buckles in general. The assessment of the load carrying capacity of such severely damaged hull sections is critical for safe operations and particularly important for emergency situations. This can be with respect to possible severe environmental impact such as dangerous cargo out-flow (oil spill) or it can be in connection with stationary field operations of FPSO units where safety and economical issues are closely linked.
