Time-Domain Analysis of Springing Problem on Large Ships

The time-domain springing analyses are carried out for 263,000 m~ 3 LNG carrier and 10,000-TEU containership by using a newly developed program WISH-FLEX, which has been introduced by Kim et al.(2008). In this numerical method, the physical problem is modeled in time domain by fully coupling a boundary element method for fluid domain and a finite element method for structure domain. The detailed method of idealizing the ship into a beam model is described, and wave elevation around ship and pressure on hull surface are compared between the cases of rigid body and flexible body. Also the motion responses and loads are compared with towing-tank test. It is clearly shown that hull girder loads of flexible body are significantly different from those of rigid body, as is the case in the traditional ship motion analysis, especially in the resonant wave frequency.
