This paper presents a successful integration of software tools into an optimization system. The purpose of the optimization system is to provide the optimal structural design of laser-welded steel-sandwich structures. This system aids the designer in achieving more efficient and reliable design in less time. System utilizes a genetic algorithm for iteration of design solutions in obtaining an optimal solution. Furthermore, it does homogenization of the sandwich panel in order to decrease the number of FE elements and save the assessment time. A VB.NET application is created to sequentially execute FORTRAN genetic algorithm followed by ANSYS structural evaluation and to store the design data to EXCEL while optimization process is ongoing. System is applied to design the corrugated-core steel-sandwich panel structure. The outcome was the structure that has a minimum weight while satisfying yield and buckling criteria.
