Based on a large set of strain measurements in a container ship, various numerical procedures are applied to estimation of fatigue damage in the hull girder. The methods include direct rain-flow counting on the measured time signal using the Palmgren-Miner rule and spectral methods on the basis of the narrowband approach as well as a combination of a stationary and a transient response by application of the method by Jiao and Moan (1990). It is found that the envelope process dominates in the fatigue estimation and that the pure transient part is negligible.
