Nanoparticles (NPs) can not only act as scaffolds, but also can be used to trigger carbon monoxide (CO) release. The very elegant light-induced CO release can so far only be used in treatment of surface tissues as the light used does not penetrate deeply into tissues. Here we report on our on-going work to modify the CO release characteristics by incorporation into nano-scale composites. Different biocompatible nanoparticles were decorated by CO-releasing molecules (CORMs). For effcient decoration we developed a L-DOPA (Levodopa, L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) derived CORM-3 analog. The CORM-functionalized NPs show temperature and pH-dependent CO release.
