Optical probing clearly surpasses tactile probing in the area of point sampling rate and structural resolution. Improvements in hardware design and software compensation methods bring certain accuracy results of laser scanners close to tactile metrology levels. The results presented are achieved with the new generation of fully digital laser scanners. The dependency on the object material reflectivity and color has been dramatically reduced by in-line adaptive laser power control. A new method and artifact for the determination of structural resolution is proposed.
