Drought monitoring in North China using HJ-1 satellite remotesensing data

Drought monitoring is very important for decision making in agriculture. In this study, Land Surface Temperature (LST) was retrieved by using single-channel algorithm. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was calculated from HJ-1 CCD data. With LST and NDVI, the Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) was obtained for drought monitoring. Taking the joint region of Shandong, Henan, Anhui, and Jiangsu province as study area, the TVDI data on February 19th, 2009 was calculated, and the distribution of drought intensity was further extracted by TVDI data. Also, the MODIS NDVI and MODIS-11 land surface temperature data obtained on the same day were used to calculate TVDI for the same area. Comparing the TVDI results with that obtained from MODIS data, the results from HJ-1 data were considerabry accurate and effective. Therefore, HJ-1 satellite data can fully meet the need of national drought monitoring.
