Electric-arc furnace dust (EAFD) coming from electric steel scrap melting plants in Poland is processed in Waelz process at BOLESLAW RECYCLING Ltd. The plant was established in 1952 and later modernized and adapted for furnace dust processing between 2003 and 2008. BOLESLAW RECYCLING Ltd. is equipped with six 40 m long by 3 m diameter Waelz kilns to give an EAFD capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum. The Waelz plant charge preparation technology is currently being upgraded to preleach impurities, primarily chlorides and lead, from EAFD using Ca(OH)_2:NaOH solution with the consecutive release of lead from preleaching solutions in the form of rich lead carbonate concentrates with lead content ranging from 65 to 75%. Waelz oxides cleaned of chlorine and lead containing a calcium compound, as the slag-forming component, constitute an appropriate charge for the Waelz kilns.
