In today’s world of professional private fire investigation, many requirements have been placed on the industry for training, education, and licensing. Each state may require private fire investigators and/or the companies they work for to be licensed as a private investigator or private detective in order to work in the state. Many states have similar laws. Some states have unique laws. Finally, some states have no laws regulating the private investigation industry at all. Each state with a law regulating private investigations has its own process for applying, maintaining, and renewing licenses. Some states may have reciprocal agreements with other states and some states have exemptions for the fire investigator to have a state license. This paper will discuss what private investigator licensing is, and will provide an overview of the laws, rules, and processes for each of the 50 states.
