Peripheral diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus

The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical-biological peculiarities associated whit peripheral diabetic neuropathy (PDN) in type 2 diabetic patients. The study was performed in 72 patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) (46% men and 54% women) with an average age of 61,5±8,3 years, with the mean of DM evolution of 10,7 years. We evaluate PDN using the Neuropathy Symptoms Score (NSS) and Neuropathy Disability Score (NDS). We analized also the presence of arterial hypertension, lipidic profile and complications of diabetes. Overall, 61% of the patients were diagnosed as having neuropathy. We observed that PDN is associated with an older age, a longer evolution of DM, also, dyslipidemia was associated with PDN at 58,3% of the patients with PDN and hypertension at 74.5% of the patients. PDN is a frequently microvascular complication of type 2 DM, which is associated with an older age, a longer evolution of DM and an increased waist circumference.
