Radicular pain. A new perspective.

Radicular pain and any other types of pain from spinal origin are frequently a serious challenge for both appropriate diagnosis and individualized effective management. Ackowledged that the sensitivity of the nociceptive system is normally being modulated by its own type of activation pattern (peripheral or central sensitization) after an appropriate stimulus, it has frequently been difficult for clinicians to distinguish between neuropathic dysfunction and physiologic neuroplasticity. In the case of a spinal lesion, this case can be further complicated either by physician specialty-related bias on diagnostic abilities in discriminating the different components of a frequently very complex mixed-type of pain, or by the difficulty on finding the appropriate clinical and imaging correlation.
