The paper has presented an overview of the criteriaand approaches considered for the preliminary sizingof structures, including multi-disciplinary criteria. Thechallenges of developing/setting up such problems for industrialapplications have been highlighted, and two potentialapproaches for addressing the MDO aspects havebeen described. These involve a preliminary proposal touse surrogate models for the estimation of aerodynamicloads as a way to bridge the model dissimilarity and computationalgap between disciplines. The use of dissimilaror reduced-order models for coupling different disciplinespecificanalyses in a single MDO process has also beendiscussed. It is hoped that the insight provided will helpthe academic community — and the optimisation communityas a whole — to get a better understanding ofthe industrial challenges, and hence formulate methodsand problem formulations that will increase the use ofnumerical optimisation.
