This paper deals with an application for achieving on-position dressing/truing and automatic compensation of diamond wheel in dry grinding. A kind of PC-based CCD online monitoring system was schemed out, which detects topography changes of the diamond wheel surface. Real-time images of the grinding wheel can be gathered into a computer when grinding. Profile data, which corresponds to the topography, can be measured by using digital image processing method. Then, the grinding wheel wear is evaluated. Dry electrical discharge (ED) assisted truing and dressing is a good method in preparation of CBN grinding wheels. Effective and precise truing/dressing of diamond wheel was carried out on a CNC curve grinding machine by utilizing dry ED assisted diamond dresser. Profiled truing dimensions were detected online by vision system. The benefits of the proposed methods have been confirmed by experimental results. In-process measurement of wheels surface topography guarantees the profile accuracy of wheels truing, and the detection accuracy is less than 5μm. The grinding machine possesses higher precision and efficiency according to diamond wheel online truing/dressing and errors compensation.
